I do a lot of work with the elderly, people in their 80s and 90s, helping them with stiff muscles, circulation, and mobility.
As we age and become less mobile, our bodies do not function as effectively as they did when we were younger. Circulation with oxygenated blood, which heals and keeps us mobile, slows down. The general functioning of the brain/body connection is compromised, leading to muscle stiffness and a slow buildup of inflammation.
Body work in the form of massage and gentle pressure can be very effective in increasing circulation, getting oxygenated blood flowing back to organs and muscles.
Receiving a massage is a far more effective way of dealing with pain than using painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication, and touch is both physiologically and psychologically beneficial.
